Pressure Losses Inside Tool Joints Can Alter Drilling Hydraulics

Abstract

Pressure losses associated with small-throated (internal upset) tool joints have been measured. Computations show that these losses may contribute significantly to the overall loss in a mud circulating system. This can limit the hydraulic horsepower available at the bit and/or the annular velocity in the borehole.
